The ATS resume screen anatomy is a four-pillar shape, not a checklist of seven or ten. Each pillar carries one decision — match the role, survive the parser, survive the OCR format conversion, satisfy the date window — and the screening pass works because each pillar pulls its weight.
Pillar 1 — Keyword coverage
The first pillar the screening pass scores is keyword coverage — does the resume carry the first-tier terms the role description names? The match is exact-match on the role's first-tier terms (job-title vocabulary, must-have tool list, primary skill names) and synonym-tolerant only on the second tier. A resume that scores a synonym cloud in place of the first-tier terms reads as a partial match, not a full match, and is routed out of the screening-pass advancing bucket no matter how senior the candidate's experience.
Pillar 2 — Section structure
The second pillar is section structure — does the resume carry labelled headers (Summary, Experience, Education, Skills) in the order the ATS parser reads them? The parser promotes labelled sections into structured database fields; an unlabelled or reordered section renders as an unstructured text blob, and the candidate's experience years, education dates, and prior-role titles drop out of the search later. Section structure is what survives the parser's first pass and earns the resume a place in the recruiter's actual queue.
Pillar 3 — Parseable payload
The third pillar is the parseable payload — the file format the candidate ships. A .docx carries structure as machine-readable tags the parser can pull into its database without an OCR step; a PDF converts to text via OCR, which loses section boundaries, eats labelled headers, and renders the resume halfway illegible. Anchorsend recommends .docx by default because the format score the screening pass assigns a .docx is materially higher than the score an equivalent PDF earns — and a four-pillar resume is wasted on a file format the parser can't read.
Pillar 4 — Recency / tenure
The fourth pillar is recency / tenure — does the candidate's recent work history satisfy the role's date window, and does their total tenure satisfy the role-fit window? Recency carries weight because the role description names a date range the resume must score within ("3+ years", "5+ years", "recent experience with X"). Tenure carries weight because the progression of roles tells the screening pass whether the candidate has crossed the role-fit threshold. The two together close the screening pass and route the resume into the recruiter-read bucket. Either alone is insufficient.

Why ATS screening is keyword-first — not experience-first.
The four-pillar anatomy doesn't just describe what the screening pass reads — it describes the order it reads them in. Keyword coverage is the screening pass's first filter, not its last. A resume with strong experience and weak keywords scores below a resume with weak experience and strong keywords; the screening pass routes both into the same destination, but only the second one survives the first filter.
Keyword coverage as the first filter
The screening pass scores the resume on keyword coverage first, then on section structure, then on parseable payload, then on recency / tenure — in that order. A resume that fails the keyword filter is rejected before the section-structure score is even calculated: the screening pass terminates on the first pillar that returns "not a match". The shape the candidate submits is calibrated to all four pillars, but the resume only routes into the recruiter-read bucket if the first pillar scores high.
Why keyword match terminates first
The screening pass is a sequence of four filters run in order: keyword, structure, parse, recency. Each filter returns a binary decision — match / no match — and the resume is routed accordingly. The candidate with the strongest experience but a synonym-cloud resume returns "no match" on the first filter, and the remaining three filters never run. The candidate with a first-tier-keyword resume returns "match" on the first filter, and the remaining three filters run on a candidate whose keyword score is already advancing. Calibration targets the first filter because the first filter is the one that terminates.
Why experience / story never gets read in the screening pass
Experience prose — the candidate's story, the role-by-role narrative, the paragraph that explains why a career change made sense — is what the recruiter reads after the screening pass routes the resume into the recruiter-read bucket. It is not what the screening pass scores. The screening pass scores the keyword list, the section headers, the file format, and the date window. The candidate's prose arrives at the recruiter; the candidate's keyword match determines whether it arrives at all. The four-pillar calibration is the gate; the prose is the read.
Ranking-criteria anchoring

The parseable payload criterion is what earns the resume a place in the scoring gate, not what advances it. A .docx carries structure as machine-readable tags the parser promotes into database fields; a PDF converts to text via OCR, which loses section boundaries and renders the resume halfway illegible to a parser. The candidate who ships a PDF earns the parseable-payload criterion on visual fidelity but loses it on parse score; the candidate who ships a .docx earns it on both. Parseability is not a format preference; it is a ranking-criterion score.
Ranking criteria, in the order the screening pass reads them
The screening pass runs parseability first (does the format survive the parser), relevance second (do the keywords match the role), recency third (does the date window satisfy the role). A resume that scores on parseability but not relevance returns "no match" on the second criterion and is rejected; a resume that scores on relevance but not parseability is rejected on the first criterion and never reaches the relevance score. The screening pass is sequential — relevance decides the route into the recruiter-read bucket, parseability decides whether the resume reaches that score, recency decides whether the resume stays in the bucket long enough for the recruiter to open it.
