ATS systems score keyword coverage by matching the text of your resume against the text of the job description. The match is literal — a resume that says "revenue operations" scores lower for a "RevOps" role than one that mirrors the exact phrasing. Check 2 — section order
ATS parsers read sections by their heading labels. A resume with a custom section called "What I have built" scores lower than one with a standard "Projects" heading — the parser cannot reliably classify non-standard labels. Check 3 — file format
ATS parsers extract text from a file before they score it. A two-column PDF with embedded fonts and sidebar sections fails text extraction — the parser reads the columns in the wrong order or misses sections entirely.
